Date Scones with Clotted Cream & Banana Jam ~ A Ramadan Special Recipe from Al Maha

(Last Updated On: 17th February 2019)

Recipe from Al Maha: Although Dates are available the year around, they take on a greater role during Ramadan when Muslims across the world break their Ramadan fast with dates. Research has also proven that eating dates after fasting has great nutritional and health benefits as they are easy to digest and gives an immediate boost to the energy. The Date Scones with Clotted Cream & Banana Jam recipe from Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa is not only delicious, it is really easy to replicate at home. Do check out our Ramadan Special section on the website, which will have many recipes using our favourite regional ingredient – Dates!

On a different note, our second #BringBackBalance #RetreatNRelax event was held at Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa in the private dining room of Al Diwan. The menu for the day was specially curated and presented by Chef Peter Sebby, Executive Sous Chef of Al Maha. There’s an option for a Healthy Menu at the resort which has evolved as a result of guests’ repeated requests and Chef Piotr Kamieniczny, also Executive Sous Chef at the resort, is involved in its creation as well as the various kitchen experiments that happens at Al Maha.

IngredientsDates Scones with Clotted Cream & Banana Jam ~ A Ramadan Special Date Recipe from Al Maha

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp butter
  • ½ cup dates, chopped into 1-2cm pieces
  • 1 egg
  • 150 ml milk
  • clotted cream
  • banana jam

  1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a large bowl. Rub in butter until it resembles bread crumbs. Add dates and then create a well in the middle.
  3. Mix together milk and egg in a jug then pour into the well. Mix all the ingredients together until its combined well.
  4. Knead dough for about 45 seconds. Lightly wet hands and separate dough into 8 individual portions. Roll into a ball and place on a tray and bake for 12 minutes.

Secret Tip! Brush some milk on top of each scone and then bake until the tops turn golden (for approximately 10-15 minutes). If you want an “Arabic” touch to your scones, try them with sweet vanilla labneh (simply mix labneh with some date syrup and vanilla bean) instead of the usual pairing of clotted cream and banana jam.
